Hi Readers.
So you are invited to a Malay Muslim wedding reception but you have no idea what to expect or have never been to one before.
Here is a beginners guide to it for those who never been to a Malay Muslim Wedding reception:
1) Do dress smart and modestly
2) Do enjoy the food and music
3) Do bring gifts (money and/or items)
4) Do meet with the bride and groom
5) Do meet with the parents of the bride and/or groom
6) Do come within the time range given
7) Don't bring your own food or drinks
1) Do dress smart and modestly
2) Do enjoy the food and music
Usually for a wedding, there will be a lot of food and music (which can be loud).
Standard food items during a wedding are Nasi Bryani or Nasi Minyak with various side dishes, popular ones being rendang and ayam masak merah. Desserts can range from the traditional kuehs to cakes and cream puffs. While food is normally given buffet style, there are times when the food is given by courses. These depends on the families preferences.
For music, it depends on the family's preferences as well so there may be malay music, arabic/islamic music and even other languages like hindi music.
3) Do bring gifts (money and/or items)
Usually a token of appreciation for inviting is given to the parent of the bride or groom in the form of money. Small gifts is also accepted. Compared to other cultures, there is no fixed amount to give and any amount given is greatly appreciated.
4) Do meet with the bride and groom
If time permits and given the chance, do stay at the event until you can meet with the bride and groom personally. This is usually during the photo taking session. This is when guests are allowed to meet the bride and groom and take photos with them.
5) Do meet with the parents of the bride and/or groom
The hosts of the wedding reception are typically the parents of the bride or/and groom so it is best to meet them when you enter and before you leave. The money/ gift should be also given to them. If you are invited from the groom side, then you should meet with the groom parents. If you are invited from the bride's side, then you should meet with the bride's parents. If you know both sides, you can meet with both parents.
6) Do come within the time range given
Most invitations have the stated time range when the wedding reception starts, ends and when the bride and groom is arriving. Be respectful of this.
7) Don't bring your own food or drinks
Try not to bring your own food or drinks to the wedding. There is enough food and drinks for everyone. This is also because being muslim, alcohol related products and non-halal foods should not be at the wedding (even as gifts).
