The confusion between duit hantaran and mas kahwin is common. Which is needed, which is not? So let's go into what are they.

What is Mas Kahwin | Mahar?

Based on ROMM website , Mas Kahwin or Mahar is a gift given from the groom to the bride after the solemnization ceremony or nikah. It symbolises the beginning of a husband's responsibility towards his wife in fulfilling her everyday needs.

Mahar can be in cash or benefits, such as gold, silver or money. Mahar is the bride's right and she owns the Mahar. Thus, she has the will to dispose of it as she wishes.

The current minimum rate for the Mahar in Singapore is S$100 cash. This is compulsory and an obligation or wajib in islam.

What is Duit Tanda & Duit Hantaran?

Duit hantaran on the other hand is not compulsory but widely done in malay culture.

Duit hantaran is a customary gift, usually in cash, given from the groom to his bride's family for the wedding ceremony. The hantaran rate must be agreed upon by both parties.

The agreement on the hantaran is usually done during the engagement ceremony when the groom's family will bring the Duit tanda. Duit tanda signify what the hantaran rate will be, e.g. if duit tanda is $80, it means the duit hantaran will be $8000 and so on.

While there is no actual minimum rate for duit hantaran, the duit hantaran usually ranges from $5000 to $15,000, some depending on the brides education level.
