Hi readers. Have you seen people carrying gift trays during a malay wedding or engagement ceremony and wonder what there are.
Wedding Gift trays or Dulang hantaran
Gifts exchanged between couples at the Malay Wedding or Engagement ceremony are called dulang hantaran or wedding gift trays. The groom and bride will decide on the number of gifts to exchange with each other during the wedding or engagement ceremony.
During Engagement
For engagement ceremony, the gifts usually are in the form of the engagement ring, 'duit tanda' or promised dowry and food items like cakes or chocolates. Some families include bunga rampai as well.
During Wedding
For a wedding ceremony, the gifts can be in the form of clothes, toiletries, bags, shoes, and just about anything, even electronics. The gifts also include the full duit hantaran (usually in the form of cheque), mas kahwin or mahr and/or the wedding rings.
These gifts or hantaran are then placed in well-decorated trays or boxes known as gubahan. The gifts or hantaran will be displayed on the table during the ceremonies for guests' viewing.
The gubahan or well-decorated gift trays can be DIY by the family members of the couple or done by a professional.
