What are Bunga Rampai, Bunga Pahar & Bunga Manggar?

Bunga rampai

Hi readers.

Well, in every malay wedding, there are 3 types of flowers or bunga that are important. These are bunga rampai, bunga pahar and bunga manggar. But what are they and what are their significance?

Let's go into it.

Bunga Rampai

Bunga rampai comprises of thinly sliced pandan leaves, rose petals and other fragrant flowers, usually jasmine and ylang ylang, and mixing rose water to it. The mixture is then place in small containers topped with a rose bud or baby breath for display. Guests will be given the bunga rampai after the solemnization ceremony or nikah. It is a symbol of hope that the sweetness of marriage will prevail.

In the past, the bunga rampai are wrapped in sirih or betel leaves. Nowadays, different types of small containers are used, from tiny baskets to handkerchiefs or face towels folded to hats. There are some that replaces bunga rampai to the more dry potpourri.

Bunga Pahar

Bunga pahar is normally placed on the pelamin or wedding dais. Traditionally, bunga pahar are artificial flowers decorating a bamboo stick and tied to hard-boiled eggs. There are then placed in a bunga pahar stand, like a tree and on a tray. The tray will have packets of glutinous rice surrounding the bunga pahar stand or tree.

The egg symbolises fertility and the hope the couple will bear a child. As the egg can easily go bad, nowadays, other food items are used to replaced the egg like chocolates, e.g. Ferrero Rocher. The glutinous rice are typically not used nowadays. After the wedding ceremony, the bunga pahar is distributed among family members and close friends of the bride and groom.

Bunga manggar are colourful, shiny paper or plastic strips wound around thin bamboo sticks. In the olden days the bamboo sticks were poked into a pineapple but now styrofoam is being used. There are usually two of them and are seen on display at the entrance of the venue of the wedding ceremony as a landmark for the guests.

Bunga manggar are also used to welcome the wedding entourage consisting of the bride and groom when they arrived with the kompang (malay drums). Both bunga manggar are temporary removed from the entrance and are carried by two members of the wedding entourage and stands beside the bride and groom for a short march from outside the wedding ceremony area (usually from the carpack or lift lobby) to the wedding ceremony entrance. The bride and groom with the kompang will then proceed to the wedding dais.
