Edible Wedding favours | Berkat kahwin Ideas

Hi readers.
In any wedding, whether malay or not, the guests are given a gift for attending the wedding ceremony. These are called wedding favours or in malay, berkat kahwin or bunga telur.

In olden times, bunga telur, translated as egg with flowers were given as wedding favours but nowadays they are called berkat kahwin as it is no longer just bunga telur.

6 best edible Wedding favours | Berkat Kahwin Ideas:

  1. Bunga Telur/Pulut Kuning
  2. Jam/Kaya
  3. Chocolates/Nuts/Crackers
  4. Honey
  5. Baked goods like Cupcakes/Muffins/Cookies
  6. Sauces like Chili sauce or Soya sauce

1. Bunga Telur/Pulut Kuning

This is the traditional wedding favour in the olden days but is not as common nowadays. The bunga Telur or Pulut Kuning are hardboiled eggs which are dyed red and decorated, sometimes placed in a cup or container with some pulut kuning (yellow glutinous rice) at the base. Flowers are sometime used to decorate it thus its name.

One main reason it is not commonly used nowadays is that the pulut kuning can easily go bad if not cooked or stored properly.

2. Jam/Kaya

This came about in recent years, using Jam or Kaya as berkat. Small 45 ml glass bottles are used, usually from a local bakery or from places like Agrobazaar which the jam and kaya are from Malaysia. The bottle is then decorated in ribbons to look presentable. It's a great berkat choice but bear in mind the weight and the fact it can easily break if dropped.

3. Chocolates/Nuts/Crackers

The favourites, chocolates or nuts or crackers, makes great choice as a berkat choice. These items are most commonly used as berkat choices due to the availability of it. You can easily buy it in bulk from supermarkets or wholesalers for cheaper price. Also, due to the many brands available, you have the choice of the best quality ones or the middle good ones depends on your budget.

4. Honey

Another berkat choice that came about in recent years, honey makes a good berkat choice. Like the jam/ kaya option, honey is placed in a small 45 ml glass bottle which can easily break. It is considered the healthier option compared to jam/kaya as honey has been known to have health benefits. But it can be expensive depending on the type and quality of the honey used.

5. Baked goods like Cupcakes/Muffins/Cookies

Baked goods are another great option as a berkat choice. It is usually done by a local bakery and can be personalised. The only downside, as it is fresh baked, the baked goods does not last beyond 3 days and can be costly.

6. Sauces like Chili sauce or Soya sauce

Sauces is, in my opinion, a new trend. Small 100 ml bottles are used for this. I find this option weird but as both chili sauce and soya sauce are used everyday in our daily food, may be that is the reason.

Note: Toko Warisan shop in Joo Chiat Complex has many edible berkat ideas to take a look.
