5 Essentials needed for a New Hijabi

Hi Readers. As of year 2021, I am a new hijabi, having contemplating to wear it for some time.  If you have made the choice to wear the hijab (tudung in Malay), that's great. This is a list of 5 essentials you will need as a new hijabi.

1) Pins

2) Brooches

3) Inners (different types) or inner cap

4) Instant hijabs or tudung

5) Shawls

1) Pins (Peniti)

Pins...Oh...you will need many pins to hold your hijab or tudung in place. Unless you are not moving your head around, you will need pins to hold your hijab or tudung in place as you move. The wind can also blow the hijab or tudung off if you don't have pins.

Nowadays, there are many types of pins, from the simple ones to the jewelled tip ones. The price range also ranges from cheap (for the simple ones) to very expensive for (jewelled ones), depending your preferences.

You can get them online, from marketplaces like Lazada, Shopee, Carousell and Amazon.sg or from various smaller Instagram online shops. Physical stores in Geylang Serai Market & Joo Chiat Complex will also have pins.

2) Brooches

Brooches can come in all shapes and sizes and can be made in all sort of materials. Like pins, brooches are to hold the hijab or tudung in place. They can be bejewelled with expensive stones or simple ribbons and can be in shapes like flowers, fruits or animal designs in many colours. The more expensive and intricate designs can be found online.

You can find them in physical stores in Geylang Serai Market, Joo Chiat Complex and Arab street. They are also available online in marketplaces like Lazada, Shopee, Carousell and Amazon.sg. You can also find them in various smaller Instagram online shops.

3) Inners or Inner cap

The inners or inner cap refer to the part that will cover the hair. It is meant as a base before wearing the hijab or tudung. Nowadays, there are many different types and colours and made in many materials.

Do choose breathable materials for your inners like cotton so that your hair and scalp can breathe in Singapore's hot weather. As for types, different types exists up to the person's comfort level.

You can find them in physical stores in Geylang Serai Market, Joo Chiat Complex and Arab street. They are also available online in marketplaces like Lazada, Shopee, Carousell and Amazon.sg. You can also find them in various smaller Instagram online shops.

4) Instant hijabs or tudung

As a new hijabi and beginner in wearing hijabs or tudung, I personally prefer instants. Instants are hijabs or tudung that already stitch together. You can slip them on after wearing your inner and just pin it down using pins or brooches. It is fast and no fuss, especially for busy women or plain lazy ones (myself included). There are even some versions which don't need an inner as there have awnings or sew in inners.

They come in a variety of colours, designs and materials, depending on your individual style.

You can find them in physical stores in Geylang Serai Market, Joo Chiat Complex and Arab street. They are also available online in marketplaces like Lazada, Shopee, Carousell and Amazon.sg. You can also find them in various smaller Instagram online shops.

5) Shawls

Shawls are either long rectangular or square pieces of cloth that make into a hijab or tudung by folding.
They come in many designs and materials. Some women prefer this as you can create different styles as your hijab or tudung but it will require more pins.

Personally, I find shawls can be difficult to handle for beginners but there are more designs available.

Conclusion

These are the 5 items I found essential for a new hijabi. Whether you use all of them are up to personal preference.

Note: You can find all the essential items in many places (both online and in physical stores) but my favourites are at Geylang Serai Market and Joo Chiat Complex in Singapore.
